Things that I've only seen in the UK

Posted on April 19, 2005 By admin 41 Comments on Things that I've only seen in the UK

– fast food chains that sell only jacket potatoes (i.e. baked potatoes).
– Crisp (i.e. potato chips) flavours like rosemary chicken, oriental rib, peppered rib eye steak, honey-glazes ham or mango chutney.
– swan roadkill.
– a bicycle crossing across a national 4-lane highway where the speed limit is 70 mph. (Katy quote: it's not recommended, but you'd be surprised by how many people do it).
– Traditional foodstuffs like toad in thw hole (sausages in yorkshire pudding – actually really good), spotted dick (suet pudding with currants), mushy peas (green peas, well, mushed).
– really BIG keys.

those crisps are a typical “travel food” for me… when i'm in the UK, i love vinegar-flavoured crisps – when i take a packet home with me, they usually end up in the garbage bin..

well, here we get “normal” crisps, pepper/chili-flavoured ones, cheese & onion and ketchup. cheese & onion and ketchup aren't exactly common, though.
so, yes, major case of “WTF” when i first came to the uk…

Cyclists in Cambridge are crazy. I don't cycle anymore, I walk, I'm not insane enough.

There's a jacket potato place in the market. I take it you haven't come across the marmite-flavoured crisps yet? I've had curry-flavoured as well.

you do not want to know this.

    marmite is evil.

  21. talisker says:

From google: Marmite is a dark-brown coloured savoury spread made from the yeast extract a by-product of the brewing industry. It has a strong, slightly salty flavour. You either “love it or hate it”. Can be eaten spread thinly on toast

  22. eniran says:
    April 19, 2005 at 4:20 pm

Marmite is roofing tar that has been packaged for consumption in hopes that people will actually believe that they need yeast extract in their diets.

Here in Montreal we had (a long time ago) Pizza, Buffalo Chicken Wings and Mashed Patatoes with gravy flavored chips (crisp), but it was so awful that it didn't survive.

  36. talisker says:

Well the Pizza and Mashed Potatoes with gravy flavored chips existed about two weeks when I was in high-school (almost 20 years ago), there was also Poutine flavored chips at that time (also disgusting). As for the Buffalo Chicken Wings flavored chips, they existed again for about two weeks when I was at the U (8 years ago). Now I don't even try the new “flavors”, I just stick with Salt and Vinegar.

  40. oraboras says:

Since I've learned that you were allergic to garlic, I started to look at the ingredients list on every thing I eat to see if there is traces of the vampire protecting bulb and I must admit that I feel your pain.

It sucks big hairy ass :-(

Quote of the day

Ankh-Morpork had dallied with many forms of government and had ended up with that form of democracy known as One Man, One Vote. The Patrician was the Man; he had the Vote.
