Bookbinding projects

Sherlock Holmes two-book hardcover set

This project was the first one I took at La tranchefile. It was the restoration of a two-volume hardcover set of the complete stories of Sherlock Holmes. It was in a pitiful state, bearing water stains on the covers, some torn pages and was generally looking quite battered. I started by completely dismantling the book, preserving the original spine lettering and cover pages (that were later used to complete the front and back covers).

The folio pages were trimmed and glued back together, then bound in cloth-covered cardboard. I’m really proud of how this came out, seeing as it was my first attempt. It’s a really strange experience to bash a book with a hammer and then take sandpaper to smooth out the rough edges of the pages. Now granted, paper is basically a wood-fiber product, but still, it’s not your day-to-day experience.

Split-open hardcover memo pad

This was the second project I did. I originally saw something similar at Omer deSerre for a ridiculous price, and shoddy workmanship. I decided to try my hand at making some for myself. I ended up making two (and gave one to someone without taking a picture first, d’oh!). The worst part was figuring out the angles to cut and fold the paper to cover the cardbord backings. The hinges are gray cloth, and the paper was bought at a wonderful paper store on Fairmount, near St-Laurent.

Things to plan for the wedding

Posted on April 6, 2006 By admin 10 Comments on Things to plan for the wedding

People are aghast that we are beginning, in April, to plan our wedding for October. To this, I saw pshaw. We have listed all the details we need to arrange, and they all fit, scribbled on the back of a BP petrol receipt.

Our budget is as follows:

-£200 for tux rental/shirt/shoes/haircut for me
-£200 for bridesmaid dress/hair/makeup for Rita
-£600 for wedding dress/hair/makeup for Katy
-£1500 for hall rental & buffet (location probably being Chilford Hall, in Cambs)
-£300 for wine/booze
-£200 for wedding cake
-£900 for wedding rings
-£100 for disposable cameras for guests

And we still need to figure in the costs for:
– invitations
– car service
– bouquet and flowers

As well as:
– making mixed CDs for background music
– selecting a gift registry
– figuring out what paperwork is involved
– getting the license from the registry office
– planning the buffet menu

A week of productive head-banging

Posted on April 6, 2006 By admin

The work I've been doing for the last week, trying to massage somebody else's data to make a square peg fit into a round hole, turned out to be a complete and utter waste of time. The data is shit, corrupted and inconsistent and I have just informed the person who gave it to me that it is so. I could say that I hope he doesn't hate me for it, but honestly, that would be a lie.

Everyone is happier, if they have someone to look down on, as well as someone to look up to, especially if they resent both.… Christopher Moore.

The good and the bad for today

Posted on April 4, 2006 By admin 8 Comments on The good and the bad for today

+ I saw the duckies again this morning on my way to work. A nice couple of mallards, just sitting in a puddle, chillin'. I don't know but I feel a nice Tony Soprano moment every time I see them.

– I seem to have misplaced my cilp-on sunglasses, again.

+ The LCD mounting bracket I ordered was delivered to the office.

– But with no wall-mounting rawl plugs (those little plastic doohikey things that you pound into a drilled hole in the wall to screw into).

+ I went to the gym yesterday and I don't ache all over today.

– I was late this morning because I fell asleep after Katy left.

I know somebody who's going to be happy about this

CHEESE can boost your sex life, help beat stress and act as a painkiller, experts claimed yesterday. It contains natural chemical phenylethylamine (PEA) which releases endorphins or happy hormones into the body, says a British Cheese Association study. Cheese has ten times more PEA than chocolate. The study says a matchbox-sized bit of cheese a day helps boost calcium intake and provides happy hormones.

Life isn't always ha-ha-hee-hee

Posted on April 1, 2006 By admin 2 Comments on Life isn't always ha-ha-hee-hee

Today started out as being a nice day. The sun was out, the horses were clip-clopping outside our bedroom window (seriously) and things looked good. We went to the pub last night for a good meal (though I ate too much) and a nice night overall. This morning, we got a nice surprise in the post when we found out that our landlady had deposited our security deposit and had only taken £120 out for various gripes. While we could probably contest that in the court of common sense, honestly, I can live with it and this now means that I don't have to think about her ever again.

We set our sights towards Saffron Walden to go investigate the town center. Things were going well too, until a unthinking gesture on my part basically shot our day from one end of the spectrum right to the other. In the blink of an eye, our day tailspinned, crashed and is now a small, charred pile of smouldering ashes.

And all I wanted was a stupid butter croissant.

Quote of the day

"But surely dogs can't talk--" Sacharissa began.
"Oh dear oh dear oh dear," said Gaspode, "Did I *say* I was talking?"
"Well, not in so many words--"
