[recipe] tomato ricotta twist bread

Posted on August 30, 2020September 1, 2020 By admin

Dough

500 g bread flour
1.5 tsp salt
1 sachet active dry yeast
325 ml warm water
2 tbsp olive oil
50 g chopped sun-dried tomatoes
50 g chopped chorizo

Garnish

150 g red tapenade
100 g ricotta
1/2 tsp dried oregano
salt and pepper

In a bowl, combine the flour, salt and yrast. Add the water and oil, knead everything into a soft and smooth dough, add the tomatoes and chorizo, mix, cover and let rise for approx. 1 hour at room temperature.

Combine the tapenade, ricotta and oregano, season.

Roll out the dough onto a little flour into a rectangle of about 24 x 40 cm and brush it with the filling. Roll the dough loosely starting from the short side. Cut the roll in half lengthwise, twist the two strips and place them in a load mold lined with parchment paper. Sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Cover and let rise a second time for approx. 30 min.

Bake for approx. 30 min. in the lower half of an oven preheated to 210C. Take the bread out of the oven, unmold it on a wire rack and let it cool.

Proud of that :)

Fact 1 – NMD and her human have moved to Lausanne, where the humans are a lot more finicky about leash laws
Fact 2 – It’s been super hot these past few weeks, and Katy likes to dunk NMD in the lake to cool her off.
Fact 3 – Leash laws mean that Katy has to go in the lake with NMD
Fact 4 – Katy doesn’t like walking with wet shoes

So what to do?

Break out the ingenuity! We ordered 5m of strapping from AliExpress, and some hardware bits from Hornbach. I then spent an hour or so breaking out my mad sewing skills, and the end produxt has been tested in anger today and the results are promising!

Troll level: librarian

Posted on August 27, 2020 By admin

The prime minister’s address to the nation’s children as they prepare to return to classrooms was upstaged by Twitter tongues wagging over a school librarian with a sense of humour. As Boris Johnson told children at Castle Rock school in Coalville, Leicestershire, that exam results had almost been derailed by “a mutant algorithm”, eyes turned to the bookshelves behind him.

Lining the shelf just behind his head were titles with rather unflattering associations for any political leader, including “The Twits”, “The Subtle Knife”, “The Resistance”, and “Betrayed”.

And sticking out like a sore thumb was “Fahrenheit 451”, a dystopian novel about a society where books are banned.

If you look closely, “Guards! Guards!”, a Terry Pratchett novel, whose plot centers around a secret brotherhood to overthrow a corrupt patrician and install a puppet king.

Then comes “Hero.Com: Crisis Point” – part of an Andy Briggs series where “super powers carry super responsibilities”?

Did you spot “Glass Houses”? Granted, this one is a vampire novel. But could the famous proverb – “those who live in glass houses should not throw stones” – be a comment on Boris’ harsh criticism directed at the exam regulator?

And could Dickens’ “Oliver Twist”, famous for its heartbreaking line: “Please, sir, I want some more”, be tactically placed on Boris’ left to remind us of the government’s free school meals U-turn?

Somebody, perhaps, felt they had a story to tell the nation today. And all behind the PM’s back.

Still running

Posted on August 26, 2020August 27, 2020 By admin

Personal best today: 8 laps at constant-ish jogging pace (between 6 and 7 minutes/km). With the to-and-fro from the flat, that’s almost 5k. My goal is to get to a 5k running distance, so that’s 12.5 laps, and I’m aiming to add one lap per week or so.

Zurich trip in a nutshell

Posted on August 21, 2020August 27, 2020 By admin

We took our first family vacation that didn’t involve going to see family in over 4 years, and our first Swiss vacation ever, and spent 4 days/3 nights in Zurich. At first, we weren’t sure if we were going to cancel at the last minute. Not because of covid-19, but because Ben came back from scout camp super tired and grumpy and we didn’t want to spend an inordinate amount of money going somewhere else to have the same arguments we could have for free, at home. In the end, we decided to go and at least Katy and I would try and have a good time – which we mostly did.

We drove up from Morges. Initially, we were going to take the train but it worked out pretty much the same price and take the same amount of time to drive/park or take the train – and we’d be able to listen to music and wouldn’t need to keep masks on for the whole time. We made decent time, and only got turned around a bit before getting to the hotel and their well-hidden parking. The hotel was super nice, and super conveniently located, but also super expensive. Well, ok for Switzerland, and we did have two adjoining rooms separated by a door so we could shut the child in his own room. This turned out to be a mixed blessing, because of course he binged on the always-on internet, didn’t go to sleep until stupidly late and was therefore tired and grumpy all the time, woohoo!

On Monday, we did a quick reconnoiter of the general area, walked around the chinese garden, picked up information for a lake cruise and went to dinner at the hotel’s teppanyaki restaurant.

On Tuesday, we went to the zoo, which is one place Katy has been wanting to see ever since we moved to Switzerland, and even more so since one of the tigers ate a keeper. The zoo was really nice, but the visit was kinda sorta marred by the small one, who kept whining about being tired and wanting to go back to the hotel, and then having a complete meltdown when we didn’t buy him all the stuff he wanted us to get him from the gift shop.

After the zoo, we went on an evening dinner cruise on the lake. That was brilliant. Good food, good wine, gorgeous weather, and Ben wasn’t a shithead.

On Wednesday, we went to the Bahnhofstrasse and the old city to have a proper exploration. Again, the child was uber tired, uber cranky and uber wanty, so … we don’t speak of that day anymore. It was also a bit annoying that the main train station is under serious renovation, so we couldn’t really see it.

Saving grace for that day however was meeting Mira in Zug for dinner at a really great little tapas restaurant. Zug is also very cute.

On the last day, we discovered a nice little shopping center where Ben desperately wanted to go to a game shop (that also has branches in Lausanne), but there was minimal drama and then we headed home.

So, in the end, Zurich is very nice, very expensive, I had a great time with Katy and I could have done without the child’s shitty moods. But we kind of expected that.

Best stick ev4r!

Posted on August 15, 2020August 25, 2020 By admin

Every morning for the past 4 days, we’ve been taking Eric for a walk in the woods. The best part of that, for him, has been when we fling a stick in the lake for him to fetch. After that, he just carries the stick with him until we get close to home. Every day he finds the best stick ever, at least until he finds an even better best stick ever!

We were taking Eric out for a walk when we noticed the lake. The weather is picking up. Might be a hell of a storm later.

Cooling off in the lake

Posted on August 9, 2020August 25, 2020 By admin

It’s turned stupidly hot again, so for our last evening walk (?) we decided to cool Not-my-dog in the lake. I think she liked it.
