Had drinks and sushi goodness with eniran and montreality last night. Soo good.

Met them at Hurleys at 6:15, where Dusty threatened to whack my ass with a stick for being yet again late. You know you're a regular patron when your bartender walks by and comments: oh, the lobster story again?. Much laughter ensued. Headed over to Bishoku for dead fish, where the ordering process took an obscene amount of time, due to more laughter and giggling. The food was up to its usual standards – by far the best sushi in town IMHO.

It was a nice evening. Both eniran and montreality took turns blushing, for different reasons, while we were talking about the usual pervy stuff. It's amazing that any conversation topic will go from perfectly harmless to completely insane and pervy in a matter of seconds.

Other random moment was when I went to settle the bill, our usual (and cute) waitress asks So where's Michel? I haven't seen him in a while. I just had to laugh.

After dinner, we did a quick little stop to Sara's workplace, cause the silly thing had forgotten to set the alarm, then she kindly drove us all home – while listening to the weirdest mix CD known to man. (I haven't heard the CareBear's theme song in over 10 years, if not more, and the Cartman quote medley had us in stitches).

After a quick little pitstop to get some kitty litter, I finally crashed on the couch to play with the cat until roomie showed up (!) and we spent a good hour talking about stuff. Getting to know him better, he's a cool guy. I think this cohabitation thing will work out.

I sent a little email to both people responsible for the McGill job. One answered back telling me he was on vacation, and that the best person to talk to was the other guy. Still waiting for his answer to see what's happening.

Edit: Just heard back from other fellow. He's also on vacation until aug. 12, but said he'd get in touch with me when he got back. Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Aaah, where to begin.

Get in to the office at a decent time again this morning, even though waking up is a cast-iron pain in the ass. First thing that's dumped on my head is that I must babysit the new intern on a project he's working on. Actually, that sounds a lot worse than it was. The intern is a nice guy, and I don't really mind doing that. What I do mind is that bossman managed to screw up a complete code package that I had written a few months ago. For those technically-inclined people out there, it's a JDBC connection pool to a mySQL database server, plus class wrappers for basic SQL operations. Anyway, nothing worked. He'd somehow – and I have no clue how that's actually humanly possible – corrupted the code archive files. So he has no clue how to fix the problem, and it's now my responsibility. Fun.

For some obscure reason I can't fathom, he insists that the intern must write code using an IDE. (Now let me take a moment to digress here. Personally, I find integrated development environments – or IDEs – to be unnecessary for most projects. They're big, bloated, slow resource whores that are a complete pain in the ass to configure properly. It's a question of preference, as most things are, but I can't stand them and find I can do just as well without them. My usual dev environment is lean, mean and efficient. It also works. Which is more than I can say for all of the other computers in this office, but that's me being nasty). Getting back to the rant at hand, I need to setup the intern's IDE.

I've already bored most of you with technical details. Suffice it to say that the software he has to use, poor bastard, is the most retarded piece of shit I've ever had the misfortune to deal with. It took me 3 hours of putzing around with the computer's firewall, database, software and settings to realize that the code that I wrote was, indeed working. If I executed it OUTSIDE of the IDE, it worked hunky-dory. If I executed it inside, all hell broke loose. Why? because one little checkbox hadn't been ticked. Buried deep within tons and tons of configuration screens, a trivial option – unset by default – would prevent most code from working. I'm disgusted with this. It just proves my point.

Boss' reaction: note it down so it doesn't happen again.

I have the firm conviction that on the day I leave this office, the technical infrastructure will fall in ruins. Not because I'm such a genius, but because most of the people are… for practical day-to-day purposes, complete boobs!

Bossman informed me that I'm getting into work too late in the morning.

Considering I don't care about my job anymore and I'm not a morning person, I consider coming into work before noon a major achievement.

So now I have to be in earlier.

Bleh.

 

After trying every trick I knew, I still can't boot onto that drive. I vented my frustration on it. Sadly, I only had my leatherman available at the office. I could have done more carnage at home. Still, this'll have to do.

Just a side note, when was the last time *you* did a backup?

I finally got the HD installed on a server at the office to try and salvage what data I can. As soon as I put it in the box and reboot, all hell breaks loose. Windows informs me that there's data corruption on that HD, and running checkdisk would be a Very Good Thing ^™. I start one. There are roughly 10,000 bad sectors on that disk. After two hours of Michel and I tossing a frisbee back and forth in the office, checkdisk was still trying to fix the HD. I'm not optimistic.

When I get home, after drowning my sorroes in scotch with Michel, I tried to logon to my wireless network at home. I was never able to. I tried to fight with it, but it won, and I'm really not in the mood for it tonight. So now I'm using my network cable, which is hanging across my room and is tempting Boris to act naughtily towards it – behaviour I'm trying to avoid at all costs.

Anyway, I checked my email, and now I'm going to bed. Night all.

So I got email from ze babe again today. I sent her email for her birthday more than a month ago. I got a reply this morning telling me how shocked and pissed off she is at me.

whatever.

I'm officially fed up with this girl. Any positive sentiments I could still have for her are now hopelessly tainted with the knowledge she's completely nuts.

Just got home and cat is really happy to see me. I'm just glad to see that he didn't destroy the apartment, though he did tip over my lava lamp, unplug my entertainment system power bar and strew some papers around. All in all, not too bad for a kitten left alone for most of two days.

So I”m on my way back to Montreal. Had a very relaxing weekend – ate too much, slept a bit, programmed a lot on LJ.NET. I need more weekends like this. What I really need to is a few weeks like that. What would be paradise on earth would be to have someone to do nothing with. Many things in my life need to change. I'm working on a few. More to come.
