Bwahahahahahahhahahaaa!

Posted on January 11, 2007 By admin 15 Comments on Bwahahahahahahhahahaaa!

From the London Telegraph. Emphasis mine. I love how they actually have to spell these things out. A big victory for common sense :)

A quiet word to loud Americans

LOUD and brash, in gawdy garb and baseball caps, shuffling between tourist sites or preparing to negotiate a business deal, they bemoan the failings of the world outside the United States.

The reputation of the ugly American abroad is not just some cruel stereotype. Rather, says the United States Government, it is worryingly accurate. Now the State Department in Washington has joined forces with US industry to plan an image makeover by issuing guides on how to behave for Americans travelling overseas.

Under a program starting next month, several big US companies will give employees going abroad a “world citizen's guide” featuring 16 etiquette tips on how they can help improve their country's battered international image.

Business for Diplomatic Action, a non-profit group funded by large US companies, has met State Department officials to discuss issuing the guide with every newly issued American passport. The guide offers a series of “simple suggestions” under the slogan, “Help your country while you travel for your company”.

The guide advises Americans to not just talk but to listen; to discuss and argue but not to be didactic, and not to foist a US world view on others.

The head of Business for Diplomatic Action, Keith Reinhard, said: “Surveys consistently show that Americans are viewed as arrogant, insensitive, over-materialistic and ignorant about local values. That, in short, is the image of the ugly American abroad and we want to change it.”

The guide also offers tips on the dangers of dressing too casually, and the pluses of learning a few words of the local language, using hand gestures and even map reading. Business for Diplomatic Action has distributed 200,000 passport-sized guides tailored to students.

RED ALERTS FOR TRAVEL

From the guidelines:

Think as big as you like but talk and act smaller In many countries, any form of boasting is considered very rude. Talking about wealth, power or status – corporate or personal – can create resentment.

Listen at least as much as you talk By all means, talk about America and your life in our country. But also ask people you're visiting about themselves and their way of life.

Save the lectures for your kids Whatever your subject of discussion, let it be a discussion not a lecture. Justified or not, the US is seen as imposing its will on the world.

Think a little locally Try to find a few topics that are important in the local popular culture. Remember, most people in the world have little or no interest in the World Series or the Super Bowl. What we call “soccer” is football everywhere else. And it's the most popular sport on the planet.

Slow down We talk fast, eat fast, move fast, live fast. Many cultures do not.

Speak lower and slower A loud voice is often perceived as bragging. A fast talker can be seen as aggressive.

Your religion is your religion and not necessarily theirs Religion is usually considered deeply personal, not a subject for public discussions.

If you talk politics, talk – don't argue Steer clear of arguments about American politics, even if someone is attacking US politicians or policies. Agree to disagree.

[info]elfs pointed me towards a new web toon that I can't stop reading.

It's called Girls with Slingshots, and I highly recommend it to a few twisted, pervy people who lurk in these parts.

[info]eniran, [info]ashre79 and [info]raspberrysalmon, I'm looking at you! Oh, and Sara, I'm certain that YourBitch™ would be into it too :)

How random…

Posted on January 8, 2007 By admin 2 Comments on How random…

Once in a while, I get random anonymous comments on my blog. Most of those are spam, but occasionally, they're random enough to make me wonder if they're real or not. Case and point, one I received today:

Hi.

Nice site design. Okay, I need your help.
So, I wanna make online-store, and I am looking for site template.
Can you advice some online store or other resource where I can find many site templates?

It would be better if it will be free:)
I think many of us have personal sites, do you design it yourself?

Thanks a lot, Bill.

Now, see, Bill is not a native English speaker, which explains the atrocious grammar. That's fine, he's posting from an IP in Estonia. What's completely useless about this post though is that he doesn't leave me any way to get back to him with answers to his question. So I won't.

What really confuses me though, is that the comment was posted to an entry I wrote weeks ago, which makes me believe it's spam. However, there's no link he's asking me to visit, and he's not trying to sell me anything.

This means that if Bill is a spammer, he's really not that bright. If he's real, he should get a proof-reader and leave a business card.

Walking the tightrope…

Posted on January 4, 2007 By admin

Feeling iffy these days. The holidays were a bit draining, and now I'm worrying about stuff that I shouldn't need to worry about (like the roof) and concentrate about stuff I should be worried about (like money, kids, immigration and long term life plans).

I have a feeling it's going to be a bumpy year, even if I'm actively hoping it won't be.

Spring cleaning

It's time for the yearly clearing out of the friend list. I've deleted a bunch of accounts that are either inactive, are never updated or that I don't read anymore. That should hopefully reduce the size of my full friend list to something more manageable.

Easter? Now???

Posted on January 3, 2007 By admin 1 Comment on Easter? Now???

We went grocery shopping last night. January 2nd. I was appalled to see that Tesco already has an Easter bunny section on display.

It's the second fucking day of the year! Easter is months away.

I hate people.

Let me call you sweetheart

Posted on January 2, 2007 By admin

A few days ago, Katy and I marathoned our way through the first season of Rome. Yesterday, we brought in the new year with a Grey's Anatomy marathon. We could have gone to the village hall and we had an invitation to go to Phil and Caroline's, but we were people'd out and we just wanted to spend some quiet time. It was a nice evening, and we finished the last episode with 5 minutes to spare for a bathroom break before the fireworks started going off on the BBC. Damn, they must have spent a small fortune for that display. Looked impressive.

Been feeling a bit bleh today. I think it's partly due to the diet of junk food and crap we've been living off since the holidays and partly due to the fact that I'm going back to work tomorrow (it's been almost 3 weeks now) and now the real world kicks back in. Bills and other money ugliness rear their head. We're going to have to deal with the estate agent to get them to fix the hole in our roof.

Ya. Get this. There have been hella strong winds in the past week hereabouts. Some time during the night this past Saturday, about a dozen roof tiles blew off. Katy noticed them scattered on our front lawn when she came back from work. There's a gaping hole in our roof that leads straight into our attic. We tried to call the estate agent but of course, they're closed. They had thoughtfully sent a letter a week before the holidays with emergency contact numbers. Unfortunately, the “emergency number whose answerphone will be checked many times daily” never actually called back and the “emergency mobile phone number if all else fails” is incorrect and missing a digit.

In a sense, we were lucky. It's not *that* big a hole, and though it has rained, it hasn't poured so there shouldn't be that much damp in the attic space. Furthermore, it's not our damn problem. That's one of the beauties of renting a house. All our stuff is insured and the house is their responsibility. Still, if it had been our boiler that broke down during new years, we would not have been amused.

In other news, I've gained weight. This doesn't surprise me, given the crap sugary, fatty, salty (tasty) diet we've been on for the past 3 weeks. I, like many others, will be hitting the gym when I get back to work. Honestly, I've let myself slip since the wedding, so I'm really going to make the effort of getting my ass back into shape. What makes me hate society as a whole though, is that the TV is full of weight-loss ads, diet and exercise program ads and – curiously – summer holiday ads. The first two are not surprising; advertisers are just tapping into the holiday guilt market. Katy rightfully commented on that last one though that it made perfect sense. Not only is it the next big expense for most families (barring paying off the xmas credit card debt) but it's also another way to tap into the guilt thing – you need to be slim to fit into that bikini for your holidays.

Bastards, the lot of them.

one of the bad things about moving to the UK

Posted on December 31, 2006 By admin

…is that I seem to have acquired a biological barometer just behind my right eye. Every time the weather takes a severe nosedive, I get a pisser of a headache – as in, can't-function-and-want-to-gouge-out-your-eye headache. Advil helps, but it's really annoying when one whole side of your head is pounding. Not fun, not fun at all.

Quote of the day

- "Sodomy non sapiens," said Albert under his breath.
- "What does that mean?"
- "Means I'm buggered if I know."
