Casino interludeĀ

Posted on August 11, 2018August 14, 2018 By admin

Katy and I escaped for a two night interlude at the Casino Hilton. We did the usual thing of holing up in the cigar lounge to drink and smoke, except that this time they were out of Cuban cigars, so we improvised. The lounge was initially taken over by OWMWM (old white men with money), who used silly-looking clips to hold their cigars, but we managed to get our regular spot by the window the second time we went.

The first night, we went into Ottawa to go try out a burger place, but it was waaaaay too crowded. We tried another place, but that one was a bit hipster and had a 30 minute wait time because the kitchen was slammed. In the end, we ended up at the Auld Dubliner in the market to get a simple yet very effective burger and pint. We stopped by a cake shop on the way back to the hotel, but the fares looked better than they tasted (way too sweet for my tastes).

The following morning was breakfast at Eggspectation, shopping for souvenirs, dinner at the hotel (with the pudding buffet!) and getting ready for the Ultimate Queen Celebration show that evening. The show was surprisingly good! Katy would go see it again, which has to be the best praise that can be given.

We stopped at the Casino after the show. Katy lost 20$ on the penny slots, but I got lucky at roulette by hitting on a number twice in a row (we think it’s because we had the orange-coloured chips) and doubling our initial playing stake, so we called it a day and went to bed. Next day was the last little treat with the breakfast buffet, then we came home. Katy was sad to leave, because it was quiet and we had lots of space to sprawl in bed.

Montréal highlights

Posted on August 3, 2018August 14, 2018 By admin

Our trip started out with us all in good spirits. As expected, that didn’t last, but that’s another story. The flights were uneventful, except that I broke my cardinal rule of air travel and didn’t pack a lunch. The child, who could eat the meal choice that would have caused me pain and discomfort, didn’t like it and ended up eating half of the only thing I could eat (and then proceeded to rave about it for the rest of the flight). We landed, got our bags, and then had a “yes, we’re back in MontrĆ©al” cab ride to our airbnb. Let’s just say the cabbie was a bit high strung…

The apartment was in the mile end. Great location, perfect on paper. In real life… it was someone’s flat, with a very particular bohemian-chic decor and a door lock that could have been defeated by a sharp sneeze. I couldn’t have lived there full-time without needing to rebuild the whole flat from the ground up and fix everything that gave it “character”. But whatever, we only needed it for a bed and a toilet and both were perfectly serviceable. The location, however as mentioned, was great. We were a stones throw away from St-viateur bagel, several good coffee shops, a breakfast place where I had a breakfast poutine, and a gin bar where they make their own tonic water and where we had a superb ploughman’s lunch.

We did our usual MontrĆ©al things: Reubens, Ming Tao Xuan, Eggspectation, etc. etc. We went to the Cirka gin distillery with Michel and Christina, then spent a lovely afternoon on the St-Ambroise beer garden swapping stories, then carried on over an izakaya-style japanese dinner (and more cocktails).

We met up with Sara and Em, our favourite not-married old married couple and caught up with all the major life events we missed over the last few years.

The last day in MontrĆ©al, we walked in the Village before taking the bus to Ottawa and talked about how the city has changed since we were last here (seems like there’s been a nutter explosion and club Super Sex closed down!!!!) and how much we’ve been spoilt with the view of the lake, the mountains and all the greenery in Morges.

Bobble and Rabbit go to London

Posted on January 8, 2018 By admin

Over the Christmas holiday, Bobble and Rabbit went to London. They ate all the cheese, and drank all the gin and wine. They also got into all sorts of mischief.

Trip to Isle of Wight

Posted on July 16, 2017May 28, 2020 By admin

We spent a week on the Isle of Wight. Ben drove the ferry on the way there. We bought gin, wine and liqueurs. We saw a funky chicken. We handled owls and saw birds of prey. A ferret walked Bean. We went on a steam railway and looked at a train museum. We saw the coloured sand of the Needles, the coastline and the lighthouse. We saw glass being blows and sweets being made. We went to a donkey sanctuary and saw lots of donkey penises and a horse with an itchy ass. We saw a model village. We went fossil hunting and saw dinosaur footprints. We went to a dinosaur museum. We heard Benedictine monks sing a mass in an abbey. Then we went home. About the only thing we didn’t really do was relax.

The owl and the kiteĀ

Posted on July 11, 2017July 17, 2017 By admin

Bobble looks scared for his life, but the kite is more interested in dismembering the dead chick in his talons. Chloe, the handler, looks on, bemused at the situation.

Bowling!Ā

Posted on December 27, 2016July 17, 2017 By admin

We’d planned to go bowling today. Even Bobble got into the action (and bowled better than I did) but we only played one game because Bean got seduced by the arcades. We didn’t manage to get it on camera, but grandma was channeling D’AndrĆ© in her post-bowling ball release posture.

Katy and I went on a date

Posted on July 15, 2016July 17, 2017 By admin

For only the second time in this trip, Katy and I were able to go on a proper date. Bobble chaperoned. We went to Coast to Coast for burgers and drinks.

Bad move. I don’t think we’ll be going there again. The service was sloooow. Kind, but glacially slow. The food was also very average. All in all, it was disappointing and left me feeling a bit queasy. A pootle around Leicester town and a good poo sorted me out, and then we were good to go see Ghostbusters. Really. Good. Movie!

Quote of the day

I think perhaps the most important problem is that we are trying to understand the fundamental workings of the universe via a language devised for telling one another when the best fruit is.
