45 revolutions around the sun

Posted on August 7, 2020August 9, 2020 By admin

Today I celebrate my 45th birthday, surrounded by my wifey and the boy, good friends in the Jones and the Lannuttis, Not-my-dog, and lots of good food and drink. We had such a nice evening we actually forgot to Instagram that shit and instead just enjoyed the company and the experience!! Shocking, I know.

You’ll have to take my word for it that the spread included homemade sushi, chicken wings with blue cheese sauce, Swiss sausages from the bbq, Italian caprese salad, Greek tzaziki, Croatian red pepper tapenade, cheese from France, Switzerland and the Netherlands, bbq mushrooms and courgettes, booze from pretty much everywhere and cake made specially by Katy. A truly eclectic but oh so satisfying buffet. Table was full!

I had a great evening. Thank you friends and family for your company!

Sushi!!!

Posted on June 1, 2020June 2, 2020 By admin

Earlier this weekend, summer rolls. Tonight, sushi with teriyaki chicken and omelette. Again, faffy but so much yum! Made 4 spicy chicken rolls and 3 egg ones. Amusingly, I ran out of rice vinegar for the rice, so I subbed with rose wine balsamic. Shhh, don’t tell the purists, but it was damned nice!

Not bad at all for a first try

I made some summer rolls today. They’re a bit of a faff to prep, but they came out rather tasty! That’s dinner sorted for tonight.

Busy busy busy

Posted on April 19, 2020April 19, 2020 By admin

So far this weekend, I’ve made scotch eggs, fried chicken, sweet chili sauce and bacon-stuffed buttermilk rolls.

Been busy! And I realized that I haven’t made those rolls in years! I had to go off-piste with the recipe because I used up all the buttermilk for the fried chicken, but all the baking I’ve been doing recently saved the day and they came out great in the end.

Cubanos!

Posted on August 2, 2019August 5, 2019 By admin

Katy and I watched Chef, a movie where a chef loses his restaurant job and starts a food truck as a way to get back his creative mojo and get his life back into shape. We really like that movie. It’s also serious food porn and put us in the mood for Cuban sandwiches. So I made some today.

Sunday lunch

Posted on July 28, 2019July 31, 2019 By admin

I really like making boards like this. I like the variety of tastes and textures, the symmetry and I find the assembly process very zen. This one had roast beef, pastrami, tzatziki, pickled onions, chili gherkins, brie, olive bread with and without tomato and espelette tapenade, balsamic roma tomatoes, radishes and cheese stuffed peppers.

The cats were also very interested.

Not impromptu but very satisfying

Posted on June 10, 2019June 12, 2019 By admin

Been craving sushi for a while, and been wanting to make sushi for a while. So I did. Didn’t have any fish at hand, we had been filet tataki, some teriyaki chicken and a tamago omelette. Ben did the rolling, I did all the other prep. Highly satisfying, even if the kitchen looked like a warzone afterwards.

Food festival in the rain

To be fair, I really didn’t mind the rain if it meant there were no insane crowds, pollen or bugs.

Italian inspiration

Katy felt inspired by her recent travel to Italy and prepared a small antipasti feast for supper. Was nice!

Quote of the day

"Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come around again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes."
