[gallery] Angelo Lembo

Posted on May 6, 2019 By admin

Angelo Lembo was born in Syracuse, in Sicily. The tempo of his whole childhood was given by the sound of his mother’s sewing machine – a dressmaker. He was fascinated when looking at her turning a modest fabric scrap into a tent dress or a three-piece suit. He thought: “when I grow up, I will do this! I want to create something! I want to see unthinkable things come true in my hands!”

This is the inspration for his MIXARTOYS. He felt the desire to have fun, to take his kid’s creative spirit up again. He thought again about his toys and games. All those cartoons characters who inhabited his room. His parents were not rich enough to satisfy all demands, so he often got wrecked figurines from friends. And yet, he fixed them up, mixing the characters to offer them a new life. It was an extraordinary life, made of fantastic adventures.

Today, he took his dusty toys out of their boxes. They are warriors. They came across wars, ashes and other bad experiences they had to bear. They didn’t give in to digital attraction. They went through areas and just don’t care about fashion, money and religion. They are immortal creatures.
Lembo wishes to offer them the life they deserve: an XXL life. Suddenly, they go taller and taller and by turns, they become brutal, rebel, sweetheart, thanks to MIX magic. They are MIXARTOYS.

Each of them is a mix of seriousness, derision, mood and humour. In a certain way, they are our childhood keepers.

[gallary] Mr. Oreke

Posted on May 6, 2019May 13, 2019 By admin

Mr. Oreke was born in 1986, he is a French artist and does “Street Pop Art”. During early 2000’s, he came across pictorial art through graffiti. He began covering walls with spray painted drawings with shimmering colors before continuing the same process on canvas.

His style drew inspiration from the pop art movement and American comics of the 50’s and 60’s. Abstraction made a major impact on his style during his early years, while masculine and feminine faces in stencil became part of his universe. Human figures is Roy Lichtenstein’s inheritance, a painter he admires for his portraits. Mr. Oreke’s uniqueness can be seen through his backgrounds where he uses spray paint in a graffiti like manner. The artist combines ink with acrylic and sometimes varied elements such as bank notes. Narration is hinted with humor, fantasy and energy. A formal freedom is added by mixing collages, colors and typographic elements….and are a lot like comic books.

[gallery] Colin Banks

Posted on April 21, 2019 By admin

Colin Banks has a passion for exotic wildlife which is powerfully expressed in his innovative animal portraiture. Each stunning image gives the viewer a remarkable sense of closeness to the animal in question. Despite the semi abstract feel to some of the work, Colin believes that the eyes should always be the focus of any life study, so this feature is always very real, drawing the viewer in and inviting them to engage with the subject.

There is also a strong sense of narrative; these animals have a story to tell, of past adventures and uncertain futures. Colin is a committed conservationist and his concerns about endangered species, particularly tigers, add a frisson of empathy and authenticity to each piece.

Posted on December 5, 2018 By admin

Mandy Budan is a Canadian artist who works primarily in acrylic. She paints abstracts of the landscape, emphasizing and rearranging the elements to show the beauty of the landscape in unexpected ways. Inspired by nature, Budan uses strong colour, discrete shapes and rhythmic patterns to create paintings which can be enjoyed for both their abstract and realistic qualities. She finds the majority of her inspiration in her home province of Ontario, but also explores the provincial parks and conservation areas and hidden green spaces looking for that elusive combination of light, colour and shape that speaks to her love of painting.

[gallery] Ukiyo-e Heroes

Posted on September 27, 2018December 1, 2020 By admin

Jed Henry is an illustrator, lifelong gamer, Japanophile, and all-around nerd. He grew up copying art from game manuals, and years later, eventually got a degree in animation. He now works full time on Japanese prints, and on his upcoming video game ‘Edo Superstar’. Jed divides his time between drawing, his family, and scheming how to move back to Japan.

Dave Bull has been in Tokyo since before Jed was born (!) having gone there to learn what he could about the craft of traditional woodblock printmaking, and has been making his living at it for nearly 25 years now. For most of that time, he worked as a solo craftsman (carving, printing, self-publishing), but for the past couple of years has been working with younger people to train them in the techniques, under the umbrella of his Mokuhankan publishing venture.

Jed first emailed Dave in 2010. Through email discussions, they threw some collaborative ideas around, but nothing really materialized from that first contact. Then in April of 2012, Jed came up with the Ukiyo-e Heroes project. Dave quickly saw possibilities in Jed’s designs, and immediately offered to make their first print – ‘Rickshaw Cart’. He jumped right in and began work, even though we weren’t quite sure how to sell them. Since that first step, they’ve gained the support of a wonderful fan community. Their enthusiasm has allowed us to expand that first design into a whole series of handmade woodblock prints.

Not only are they making fun, meaningful art, but they’re also working to save the Japanese woodblock community in a very real way. Through print sales, Dave has been able to pay a workshop full of apprentices, and even employ seasoned masters in the craft! Their goal is to pump vitality back into this art form, by giving it modern appeal, while maintaining its ancient traditions. And it’s working!

For hundreds of years, Japanese woodblock printmakers worked in a thriving popular art scene. Their prints depicted heroes, villains and monsters, spanning every genre from satire, to romance, to horror. It was all part of Ukiyo, or Floating World culture. Inventive and fast-paced, Ukiyo culture was the big movement of its day. That tradition has continued through the centuries, down to our modern day, where Japan is still known for its vibrant creativity. This heritage is especially evident in Japan’s video game industry. Boss fights. Invulnerable heroes. Holy swords. Even the classic double-jump can be traced back to medieval Japanese legends.

To celebrate Japan’s contribution to video games, illustrator Jed Henry has taken his favorite game characters, and returned them to the ukiyo-e style. Modern costuming has been traded for the medieval, but the essence of each character remains, proving that you can’t take the Ukiyo out of these modern pop icons.

[gallery] Hayley Goodhead

Posted on September 10, 2018November 4, 2018 By admin

Born and brought up in Staffordshire, Goodhead displayed much promise and raw talent towards the subject of art in its various forms from an early age, and therefore it shocked no-one to learn that Goodhead wanted to heighten and further her interest and skillset within a higher educational surround. She secured herself a weekend job doing commission work to her fund her way through Uni and her immediate life on successful completion of her course.

Hayley’s witty and distinctive animal images are inspired by all things contemporary – well known brands, the colours and patterns of the fashion world, the modern love of the visual joke – and she brings these elements together in her uniquely appealing realist style and vibrant palette.

[gallery] Michael Summers

Posted on April 1, 2018 By admin

The paintings of Michael Summers take us into a crisp and colorful world, alive with nostalgia, splendor and whimsy. Within each vibrant scene are playful reminders that our everyday lives are filled with wonder, beauty and magic, if only we allow our eyes to see it.

The meticulously crafted paintings of Michael Summers are firmly rooted in contemporary west coast surrealism with a strong pop sensibility. He uses his Pop Surrealist style as a tool to reflect his inner vision: creating the impossible and more importantly, making the impossible seem plausible. The artist creates imaginary characters – often alluding to mythical archetypes – in acrylic paint with a keen hyper-attentiveness. His unorthodox use of intense saturation and arbitrary, multi-chromatic hues encourages the viewer to look a little closer, a little longer. The recognizable subjects of animals, automatons, and humans suddenly become magical and extraordinary. Yet, they somehow still retain the nostalgia of a child-hood memory that was once long forgotten.

Commissioned to create prominent, large-scale murals that are seen by thousands daily, Michael Summers grows in ever-increasing popularity. He has been chosen as the Featured Artist and Muralist for a multitude of Art Festivals over the past ten years.

Brian Kesinger is a story artist at Walt Disney Animation Studios. He’s also an author and illustrator of Walking Your Octopus. Kesinger masterfully blends the Disney world with the steampunk universe and imagines exciting adventures of a very unlikely friendship. The main characters of these wonderful adventures are Victoria and her per octopus, Otto. “Everyone can relate to having a pet,” Kesinger says. “What I wanted to do with Otto and Victoria is to ask the question ‘What if your pet was an octopus?’ As soon as you do that you start to raise humorous scenarios like how hard would it be to housebreak an octopus when they’re inking everywhere.”

He’s also getting a large following for his novel mash-ups of Star Wars, Dr. Who, Calvin & Hobbes and many others

Quote of the day

Rumour is information distilled so finely that it can filter through anything. It does not need doors and windows -- sometimes it does not need people. It can exist free and wild, running from ear to ear without ever touching lips.
--(Terry Pratchett, Feet of Clay)
