Life, ongoing

Posted on July 10, 2012 By admin

The EBI Summer Party has come and gone (under a deluge of rain, but was very successful nonetheless). The PRIDE Converter 2 manuscript is submitted, and all the documentation, help files, user manuals, developer manuals and example data sets have been finalized and uploaded. All of this is good.

Heard back from an opportunity I’d looked into. No joy on that front, which makes me a bit blue but the timing wasn’t the best anyway so it’s not the end of the world. Katy has a date for her operation, which is making her a bit nervous (and so I am, to be honest) but we’ll have the chance to talk to the surgeon beforehand so that should be good. She’s also seeing the dermatologist again, so hopefully things will progress on that front as well.

Our trip to Canada is still in the books for October, but we’ll wait to buy the tickets until after Katy’s all better. Bean is still being Bean, with all that entails. Hopefully we’ll have a bit of summer weather at some point soon so that we can take him to the beach.

We’re going to be taking on a lodger for a few months – one of Katy’s work colleagues. That should help get rid of a the credit card bill. Who knows, might even be fun to have another body around the house. Hopefully we won’t scare her off with the Christmas decorations :)

More money going out the window…

Posted on October 18, 2011 By admin

The rate of Consumer Prices Index (CPI) inflation in the UK matched its record high in September, rising to 5.2% from 4.5% the month before. An increase in energy costs was behind a large proportion of the rise. The 5.2% rate is the highest CPI measure since September 2008, and it has never been higher since the CPI measure was introduced in 1997.

The Retail Prices Index (RPI) – which includes mortgage interest payments – rose to 5.6% from 5.2%. The latest RPI measure is the highest annual rate since June 1991.

Expensive weekend!

Posted on August 15, 2011August 15, 2011 By admin

What did we do this weekend? We spent MONEY!

We went to Costco to replenish out supply of dry goods and cleaning products (£200)
We went to Ikea to buy some storage container for Bean’s arts and crafts supplies and steps for him to use in the bathroom. Of course, we left with may more shit than that (£90)
We went to Scottsdales for our regularly scheduled Sunday lunch outing. That’s always costly :) (£100)
We bought a new laptop, because the old one is finally on its last legs (£315)

So yeah.

Ouch.

It’s a good thing we don’t have many weekends like this.

To be honest though, the Costco outing is actually saving us money in the long run because we plan to buy stuff that’s generally 1/3 to 1/2 cheaper than what we’d pay at Tesco in our weekly grocery bill. I also need to point out that the laptop lasted surprisingly longer than I expected it to, considering that the screen is only hanging on by one hinge, the battery hasn’t worked in months, the CD cover plate got ripped off and the whole front panel/keyboard is about halfway off the laptop. I’m impressed with the build quality of the thing, considering that I don’t remember the number of times it’s been pushed/fell off the back of the sofa.

Good news, bad news

Posted on June 27, 2011 By admin

Good news: the electrician fixed all of the remedial work that needed doing.
Bad news: the RCD still keeps tripping.
Good news: the electrician has some suggestions we can try to help isolate the cause of the very intermittent problem.
Bad news: the suggestions doesn’t help the fact that the RCD tripped over the weekend, when we were in Leicester, and half our freezer defrosted.

Good news: we’re going to get the windows and doors replaced.
Bad news: it’s going to cost £4000.
Good news: it’s not as much as I feared, and we’re getting nice stuff.
Bad news: Natwest are being bastards about extending our existing loan.
Good news: My credit score is still classed as good, and we’ve found alternate means of financing, so screw you Natwest.

Good news: the cats are doing well and don’t seem too bothered about the heat.
Bad news: they feel well enough that they caught and ate a bird, inside the house, while we were away.

Good news: Katy’s going to reduce her hours so that she doesn’t feel as crappy and tired all the time
Bad news: Katy’s still feeling tired and crappy all the time.

Yay, insurance

Tolstoy’s vet bill so far is over 1300 quid, and he hasn’t even been operated on yet. Shudder to think what the final bill will be…

Further proof of the insanity of the UK housing market

Posted on October 29, 2010October 29, 2010 By admin

This was in the Saffron Walden weekly news recently:

A National Housing Federation (NHF) report shows that the average house price across the district in 2009 was £303,923, while the median salary was just £23,421 – which means that buyers need 13 times their income to purchase a house. The average house price in the East of England was £215,260, 10 times the average regional income of £21,492. The NHF found that only one-third of young working households in the region could afford to buy a property at the lowest end of the house price range. Its findings come just after the Nationwide’s latest survey revealed that house prices in north Essex have almost doubled in a decade.

Well there goes the motorcycle, for now…

Posted on October 29, 2010 By admin

Le poop.

After going over the bills, it would seem that my plan to buy a motorcycle in the short term just went out the window. Our Canada trip cost rather more than we’d allowed for and our bathroom renovations ran a week longer then expected. Both of those combined mean that the money I had earmarked towards a bike needs to go towards something more utilitarian.

Oh well.

Not in my happy place

Posted on June 22, 2010 By admin

I am very anxious at the moment. We’ve just had the boiler replaced, and we had to do unexpected repairs to the car in the past couple of months (two tires and a catalytic converter). Now it would seem that the car’s AC has packed it in. I don’t know how much that’s going to cost, but I do know we don’t have that money.

Beastie is pushing all of my buttons by being a tired git these days. The only time I seem to be happy to have him around is when he’s sleeping. Otherwise, I’m very quite happy to be at work and away from the tantrums. This will get worse before it gets better.

One of those days^H^H^H^H months.

Katy and I suck at being frugal. To whit: in this month, we bought a new boiler, a new patio door, two new tires for the car and now, it would seem, part of the muffler needs replacing (of course, the part that wasn’t repaired less than a year ago and now under warranty). Fun times ahead!

I’m beginning to freak out a bit about our monetary situation. Over the course of a year, it’s not too bad but it just seems to be piling on all of a sudden and we still have a trip to Canada to somehow shoehorn into our finances, and since I now finally have my license, I’d like to be able to actually drive. MORE MONEY, YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

*fret!*

Going to be an expensive year

Posted on June 4, 2010 By admin

Katy and I were having a chat recently. Between having the patio door replaced, getting a new boiler fitted and going to Canada, it’s going to be a spensive year.

Oy.

Quote of the day

- "My granny says that dying is like going to sleep," Mort added, a shade hopefully.
- I WOULDN'T KNOW. I HAVE DONE NEITHER.
