Pink Floyd to release a new album in 2014

David Gilmour’s wife has revealed that Pink Floyd will release a new album this October. The Endless River is the group’s first album since 1994’s The Division Bell, and was reportedly inspired by the same recording sessions. Polly Samson, who married Gilmour in 1994, unveiled Pink Floyd’s secret plans on her Twitter account. In addition to announcing the album’s title and release date, she referred to the record as “Rick Wright’s swansong”. Wright, who co-founded Pink Floyd with Syd Barrett, Nick Mason and Roger Waters, died in 2008.

Vocalist Durga McBroom-Hudson, who has toured with Gilmour and Pink Floyd, subsequently shared some further details. “The recording did start during The Division Bell sessions (and yes, it was the side project originally titled The Big Spliff that Nick Mason spoke about),” she wrote on Facebook. “David and Nick have gone in and done a lot more since then.” That “Big Spliff” session was described in Mason’s memoir Inside Out, where he called it “ambient mood music” akin to “bands like the Orb”.

According to McBroom-Hudson, The Endless River “was originally to be a completely instrumental recording”. But Gilmour gradually changed his mind, inviting McBroom-Hudson to record backup vocals last December and adding more singing since then. Gilmour has “done a lead on at least one [track],” she said, and Samson, who co-wrote seven of The Division Bell’s tracks, described herself on Twitter as one of The Endless River’s lyricists.

I miss the boys

Posted on July 14, 2012 By admin

I just finished watching a documentary on the making of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, and I have a massive pang of longing for the many, many, many nights I spent with the boys, listening to that album, completely high as a kite, and blissfully happy being carried by the music.

That was 15 years ago now. Things, it seems, were a whole lot simpler. No mortgage, no kid, surrounded by friends and with my whole life ahead of me.

Now don’t get be wrong, I’m not saying my life now isn’t as good, in different ways, but sometimes it feels a hell of a lot more complicated.

Roger Waters, The Wall, O2 Arena

Posted on May 18, 2011December 6, 2013 By admin

Phil and I went to see Roger Waters perform The Wall in London last night, and the show lived up to expectations – even considering that I’d already seen it in Ottawa. They’d revamped some of it, which was a fun touch. Because of the tablets I’m currently taking, I couldn’t follow through with my original intent, but it was a great show nonetheless.

We’d decided to have a boys day out in town. We had lunch at a really nice sushi and noodle restaurant I’d seen online, called Taro, where I had a huge bowl of beef ramen. They didn’t kill me, which is a big plus. I need to bring Katy there next time we’re in town. Phil had never been to the British Museum and I’m always looking for a reason to pop in, so that was a nice way to kill a few hours. After that, we had a bit of a sit down in a pub and then headed back to the O2 to pick up the tickets and wait out the show opening. It was amusing to note that the average age of the concert goers was above 40, with some actually closer to their sixties and seventies :)

I can only hope to be this awsome when I’m 65

Posted on May 16, 2011 By admin

Roger Waters and David Gilmour have been involved in a bitter stand-off for a number of years but were reunited once again for a gig at London’s O2 Arena. Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason was also on stage for the tour’s first of six nights in London, on May 12th. Gilmour’s surprise appearance was as a thank you to Waters who had previously accompanied him at a small charity gig. The solo tour sees The Wall being played live in the UK for first time in 30 years.

I have tickets to go see the show on the 17th. I missed out on the reunion gig, dagnabbit, but I’m still really looking forward to seeing the show.

And I know that I’m never going to be that awsome when I’m in my sixties.

Quote of the day

However, you do *need* rules. Driving on the left (or the right or, in parts of Europe, on the left and the right as the mood takes you) is a rule which works, since following it means you're more likely to reach your intended rather than your final destination.
