Letter to a starred Michelin restaurant

Posted on November 9, 2014 By admin

Katy and I went to dinner Friday night, something that we rarely have the chance to do. Katy was really looking forward to it, but in the end, we were disappointed. I wrote this email to the restaurant to share our feelings and thoughts. I’d be curious, Internet collective, to hear your thoughts on it.

My wife has just recently come out of a lengthy hospital stay at the CHUV and tonight was supposed to be our belated anniversary dinner. Tonight was our third time going to [RESTAURANT] and we were eagerly anticipating our night out.

We both had the menu de la mer. The food was up to its usual brilliant standard, save for some unexpected hard, inedible bits in the potatoes with lardons. However, we must regrettably say that the service was not on par with the usual level of excellence that we have experienced in the past.

My wife and I were at a table completely at the back of the dining room and spent an unacceptably long amount of time with empty water and wine glasses when tables around us did not seem to have this problem. We had to keep asking for more, where the last visits had a completely flawless and unobtrusive service.

The last times we left the restaurant happily tipsy, this time we were rather sober, and somber. The first time we ate at [RESTAURANT] , we wrote to praise the food and service. Given the circumstances surrounding our evening, even though the food was delicious and the staff were knowledgeable and helpful, the overall service left us rather disappointed.

We will certainly come again, and want this message to be taken in that spirit. We know the level of food and service you are capable of, but regrettably tonight you did not live up to your previous standards.

Bean wwnt to two halloween parties tonight. Pepe le Katy took Zombie Darth Vader to one at Ryan/Sally/Zoe and then all of the kids of the building went throughout the building. It’s somethins that a neighbour started last year, and since she moved, we followed up on it. It seemed to be a hit with all of the parents in the building – possibly less so for the neighbours :)

Still, the child’s haul is impressive. That’s a giant freezer bag – bigger than my hand. We’ll need to do a serious sweetie cull, or we;ll e peeling him off the ceiling for the next month.

Partly it’s cute, but partly it’s annoying because it’s early on a Saturday and you just want to sleep.

We all went for a walk by the lakeside yesterday. It was a gloriously warm, sunny day. Hard to believe it’s halfway through October.

Our evenings mainly involve watching bad TV, sometimes with wine.

We all went to see Katy at the CHUV this weekend. Ben was very excited, as he hadn’t seen her since last Monday when she was admitted. He brought her pictures, sweeties, a slice of cake, his(!) tablet and a bunch of cuddly toys.

Conversations with the child

Posted on September 17, 2014 By admin

These days, Bean is a chatterbox on the way to school. Some gems from this morning:

– daddy, you need to get a real job.
– but I already have a job
– no, not work, a job. Like a cook, or a seller.
– do you mean a sailor?
– no, a seller, with a shop. Like a wine seller, that would be good.
– but then mummy would drink all our wine and we wouldn’t have any to sell.
– oh… How about a wine restaurant then, and you could tell mummy that she can only have one bottle a day.
– yeah, the world work.
– OK. When you finish your work, do that. That’s a good plan.

And my favourite :

– daddy, you need to take mummy out on a date.
– ??? OK, but we’ll need to wait until she feels better.
– all right. But you’ll need to buy her some nice flowers.
– OK.
– and some chocolate. And some candy. And take her to see a super duper duper super scary movie called werewolf zombies eat your brains with a headless king in it (!!! I kid you not). And you can even kiss her on the lips!
– Riiiiiight.

So yeah, a very good but very random moment. He also had me thank his teacher for teaching him French, because he’s really starting to want to pick it up.

Quote of the day

Everything starts somewhere, though many physicists disagree. But people have always been dimly aware of the problem with the start of things. They wonder how the snowplough driver gets to work, or how the makers of dictionaries look up the spelling of words.
--(Terry Pratchett, Hogfather)
