Someone to watch over her…

Posted on January 28, 2014January 29, 2014 By admin

There was chaos on the roads because of high winds and blowing snow on Monday, resulting in a major pileup on Highway 417 in Eastern Ontario, near North Glengarry.

In total, twenty vehicles were involved in this series of accidents, which occurred shortly before 4pm westbound, between the villages of Saint-Isidore and Vankleek Hill, near Highway 34.

A Voyageur coach, two tankers, a semi-trailer truck carrying a cargo of cars and some cars were involved in the pileup which were likely cause by the poor weather conditions.

Fifteen people were injured slightly. Two further people had to be transported to the hospital.  Several emergency vehicles were deployed to the scene of the incident, almost halfway between Ottawa and Montreal.

In total, more than 150 accidents were reported during the day, both on Outaouais roads that Eastern Ontario, due to difficult road conditions.

One of the people that went to the hospital was my mom, coming back from seeing my sister in Montreal. The coach got caught in the tail end of a white-out and collided into the back of a car,  itself involved in the multi-vehicle pileup. My mom, sitting in her usual spot in the first row seat, went through the front windshield of the bus and landed on the road. Miraculously, and I don’t use the word lightly, the only injury she suffered was a cut on the top of her head,  requiring a dozen stitches, and a big bruise on her shoulder. She thinks that the glass probably shattered when the bus hit, lessening the impact when she went through it. I can’t really believe I just typed that…

She thinks she might have blacked out for a bit, but not too long, and was lucid the whole time, after realising she was on the road, getting wet from the snowstorm. The paramedics did the whole neck brace backboard thing, but xrays showed there were no fractures, no concussion and they only kept her for observations for one night. She feels a bit stiff,  but less than she expected to. She’s mostly annoyed that she can’t wash the blood out of her hair. Tough (and lucky!) old bird, she is.

Katy wrote this morning:

You get a feel for what kind of day its going to be when not only do you realize your top is on inside out, but back to front as well…

I’ve been staring at the same word document for the last 5 minutes, trying to read the same sentence, and I just now realized that I haven’t blinked once in that time.

Biggest oxymoron I’ve seen in a while…

Dont-take-it-Personally

I was listening to some music on my ipod and a song made me think of Crazy German Girl. It happens once in a while, and sometimes I wonder what she’s up to and if she’s happy. She was a really close friend once, and I’ve always had a lingering malaise at how we broke things off. This time, something in the cosmic balance made me send her an olive branch email and see what happens from there.

I got this back from her:

Hi Richard. Looooong forgotten, no need for a lingering malaise. Don’t take it personally, but I’m not interested in staying in touch.

So yeah, I won’t take it personally ;)

UPDATE: It gets better :) About 20 minutes later, I get this:

fyi i am sure we went through this same exchange at least once. maybe delete my email addresses…

A quick look through all of my gmail would seem to disprove that. I don’t remember it, if it happened.

UPDATE 2: So, 3 hours after the last email, to which I didn’t respond to, I see this in my inbox:

So I just looked through my inbox. You contacted me previously with similar reconcile/stay-in-touch request.  As per my previous email of this morning, if you can please delete my email addresses in your contacts and/or refrain from using them in the future.

Katy says that I already have a neurotic woman in my life and I don’t need another one. I have to concur. So, as per her wishes, I will delete all traces of Crazy German Girl from my email and contacts.

Have a good life, Tina; hope you allow yourself be happy.

The advantages of working in a technical institute

screwdriver

My glasses slipped off my nose when I was bending down and fell on the floor. One of the lenses went poing! I thought it might have broken, but I was lucking in that sense that it had only popped out. I went through a few of the labs and found one who had a set of jeweler’s screwdrivers that I could borrow. After that, I was able to clean my glasses with 70% ethanol and kimwipes. Brought back memories :)

Harder than I expected

Posted on January 12, 2014January 13, 2014 By admin

So, this post-a-day thing is going to be a bit harder than I thought it would be. Not a lot to say today. Got the NAS up and running so we have access to our pictures and music. Made a nice curry for dinner. Went for a walk along the lake with Katy and bean. Yelled at the child a lot. Typical weekend stuff. Will post pictures when my phone is charged.

Edit: Here are the pictures

Can’t seem to wake up

tired-owl

I can’t seem to wake up these days. I’m chugging caffeine at work, but to no avail. I sleep ok-ish, but I’m not getting rested. Weird dreams.

Back to work

Posted on January 6, 2014 By admin

First post-holiday back at work, and I’m sorting through my inbox and various dead-tree format paperwork. Day seems rather… long. Just found out that I missed an email last december informing me that I’m giving a presentation next week, doh! My new glasses are giving me a bit of grief for computer work :( I’m going to call my ophthalmologist about that tomorrow.

For the past 2 weeks, Bean has been getting up at the crack of dawn, full of pep. This morning, seeing as it’s a school day, I had to wake him up at 7:30. This does not bode well for his teenage years.

Quote of the day

"Taxation, gentlemen, is very much like dairy farming. The task is to extract the maximum amount of milk with the minimum of moo. And I am afraid to say that these days all I get is moo."
