Long weekend update

Posted on November 19, 2007 By admin

Katy and I had a very productive weekend. We'd both taken Friday off to go into town and finish up the last of our xmas shopping. People look at us like we're insane when we mention that all our shopping is done. It's not our fault – we were forced into it. And think, Katy's folks' shopping is not only done and completed, but also already all gift-wrapped. Scary!

I'd managed to book myself an appointment at my optometrist on Friday afternoon. The good news is that my eyesight is stable and as good as they can make it and my eyes are in good shape. The bad news is that my eyesight is just about borderline to drive. As in, it would probably come down to the DVLA eye exam to determine if I can drive or not. Not the news I wanted to hear, really. I'd hoped they could have tweaked my prescription just enough to allow me to drive, but that's not possible. Meh. I'll see if I start taking driving lessons anyway in the new year and hope for the best. Coming back home was a nightmare. We were stuck in rush hour Cambs traffic for well over an hour (for a journey that normally takes about 20 minutes) and then we finally made it home in time for Donna and Will to come over for dinner.

On Saturday, we went to Saffron Walden to go have a look at the new Adnams Wine Cellar that opened there. It's not as big as the main one in Southwold, but it was still interesting enough to pick up a few bottles of wine. We also stopped by the butchers there and couldn't resist walking away with 4 kilos of prime Scottish beef. Half of that is in braising steak form and the other half of that is cubed (and already marinating to be turned into a steak and strong Suffolk Ale pie tonight – watch this space!)

I took some pictures of the pussy cat.

He's such a grumpy animal, it's not even funny. This morning, even, he bit me while I was trying to get some stinging nettles and other flora seed pods out of his fur. He's also a crap guard cat. When we came back from grocery shopping on Saturday, I opened the front door and heard a cat bell jingling about upstairs. Nothing unusual about that. Except that the cat that was jingling about wasn't ours, but some unknown black & white spotted cat that we've seen before in the village. He'd simply wandered in using the cat flap and was having a mosey around the house. He seemed a bit shocked to see us because he bolted out the front door as soon as he saw me :)

We had to go into Cambs against our better judgement to go meet a friend of Katy's who was in town for a College dinner. Even taking the Park & Ride, it was insane. It was so crowded as to be unpleasant. It'll only get worse for the silly season. In that sense, I'm glad we don't need to go into town again for shopping. Our trip into town threw a bit of a spanner in our dinner plans and we ended up eating at 8pm. Not good. We'd planned to make nachos and pizza again but – gasp! – I'd done something silly and bought flavoured tortilla chips instead of the plain ones we needed. That wouldn't have been so bad if the flavoured ones didn't have garlic in them. Our food crisis was thankfully solved by a quick trip to the Sawston Budgeon's (we called to make sure they had some. They had, yay!). Homemade nachos? They rock.

Sunday was a slob day. We decided to take a break from the gym and spent as much of the day dressed down as we could. We decorated the house with xmas lights and put up our “tree”:

I'm also inordinately proud of the fact that I finally fixed the damn lock on the front door. The thing was getting so loose that the whole cylinder was wobbling when we were trying to lock or unlock the door. I had to take the backplate off and tighten all the screws holding everything in place but, thanks to that and a bit of WD40, it feels like a new lock. This makes me happy. It'd been getting on my nerves for weeks now.

We did the usual weekend stuff (dishes, laundry, tidying up, etc) and we also did something that I hope will become a staple of our weekends: we played a round of cribbage :) I've been teaching Katy and her parents how to play. Katy's a natural. I keep (jokingly) commenting that she's picking up the game too quickly for my liking.

A real update, for a change

Posted on November 12, 2007 By admin 6 Comments on A real update, for a change

I've notived a trend in my recent entries – mostly they fall in the “news from the stupid” or “america is going to hell” categories. I'll try and do better. Therefore, this entry.

Katy and I were in Leics this weekend for Katy's parents' anniversary and Stu's birthday. It was an ok weekend. Friday night was a bit rocky because we gorged ourselves at the pudding club. This was not a good idea. The meal in itself was lovely (I had cod for the first time and discovered that I like olives and artichoke hearts) but the sheer amount of fat and sugar we ate meant that both of us were so wired that we were still up at 4am reading a Kleeneze catalogue. Yes, it was that bad.

We managed to get a few hours of sleep and head to Leics without major issue. We spent a few hours in town gethering the last of our Christmas shopping and then headed to the in-laws. The weekend itself was uneventful. I attempted to teach the Grogans how to play cribbage, but since we didn't have a board, we had to rely on pen and paper to keep track of the pegging. Still, we managed to get two hands in and I think it might catch on when we finally do get a peg board.

We got home around 7pm and had the cat join us as a welcome wagon. He's cute when we wants to be. It's always nice to have him greet us when we come home. What's a tad worrisome though was that he came from across the road and greeted us in the driveway. Not a lot we can do about that – we can only hope he'll be careful about traffic.

I made a quick and dirty homemade tomato soup for a light dinner and that was pretty much the evening. We watched Top Gear and I had a shower while Katy watched a weird comedy/trama thing on the Beeb. I had a bit of trouble falling asleep last night and only ended up going to bed at 1:30am. It's been a bit of a long day…

We seem to have a lot on our minds these days. A lot of it revolves around Christmas. It's been stressful. If it wasn't for the fact that it's been “planned” for a year now and most of it has been paid and is non-refundable, I'd just barricade myself at home with lots of booze and wait for it all to go away. Katy and I have had to organize things from both sides of the ocean with two sets of parental units. My coworkers are pissing themselves from all the stories I keep telling. It can be funny from an external point of view. It can also be putting a large strain on the holidays and take the fun out of it. I'm sure it'll all go well with a minimum of drama. I'm sure we're making a mountain of a molehill.

Right now? I'd just settle for having a quiet weekend with Katy and having nothing to worry about.

Weekend update

Posted on November 5, 2007 By admin

We had a busy weekend. Saturday saw Katy and I wandering around Cambs separately to do a spot of xmas shopping. Sunday was spring-cleaning-in-autumn day. We took a flame-thrower to the whole house. It was sorely needed and back-breaking work, but the end results was really worth it. We threw out a bunch of stuff, sorted through the piles of paperwork on the office desk, vacuumed, scrubbed, sorted, sifted, cleaned, folded, put away and every other cleaning-related verb you can think of. We even hung up the last remaining pictures!!! (some of which had been lying around for the last 18 months or so). So yeah, go us!

As a reward, I made us nachos and pizza! Nachos!!!! I haven't had a good plate of nachos in years! Dinner was evil, but nice :)

A bunch of pictures we took in Leicester a few weekends ago when the Grogans went to put flowers on Katy's grandmother's tomb.

Busy (and costly) weekend

Posted on October 22, 2007 By admin

Katy and I spent in excess of £10,000 last weekend.

First, we bought a car:

It's a 2003 Toyota Corolla 1.6 T3 with just a little over 20,000 miles on the counter. It's had 3 services and 2 MOTs and the body work is in fine shape. We just need to get the loan deposited in the account now and we can sort the final paperwork exchange next Saturday.

We drove up to Leicester because we just couldn't quite grasp the enormity concept of having bought a “new” car. While we were in Leics, we finally bought the plane tickets to go to Canada for the holidays (after much badgering from Katy's parents). We're leaving Heathrow on the 19th and coming back on the 30th-31st. It really is a pain that Zoom doesn't fly to Ottawa in winter because we could have saved about £250 per ticket – and flown with more leg room in the process!

Then, to top it all off, we also booked the hotel in Montreal where we're going to be spending two nights around the time of Katy's birthday. For those of you who know it, we're going to be staying at Le St-Sulpice, in the old port.

Now that the flights and the hotel are sorted out, we just know that Katy's parents going to start banging on about a full trip schedule for Ottawa and Montreal. They – and most specifically her dad – are complete planning freaks. They put Michel's parents to shame…

When we got back to Cambs on Sunday night, there were pictures of our new pussycat waiting for us in my inbox.

Isn't she just the cutest thing EVAR?

A nice, relaxing, weelend. Kinda. Sorta. But not.

Posted on September 3, 2007 By admin

Weekend was nice, mostly, but didn't go according to plan, mostly. On saturday, Katy and I drove up to a little pet shop north of Cambs to go buy a fish tank. We got a really nice starter kit for a really decent price. We were told that the tank needed to be setup and working for about a week before we should be putting fish into it (mostly to de-chlorinate the water and let the filter get up to speed).

We got the tank, filter, light, heater and gravel for £85, so go us! We're going to go back next tuesday to get some plants and get the fish on thursday (should be ok by then).

We got back home at 1pm, had tea and got ready for the second part of the day. We wanted to go see a double-bill of Transformers and Bourne Ultimatum in town and then go for a nice meal at Cafe Rouge. We'd planned to take the 2pm bus into Cambs which would have left us with plenty of time to get everything done. Unfortunately, the 2pm bus only showed up at 3:30 – apparently the bus wouldn't start.

Now, you see, in Canada, they'd have just gotten another bus. Apparently things don't work that way here, so they simply cancelled the only – hourly – bus into town while they were trying to pull the finger out. Blergh. Now I understand why Katy says that nobody likes public transit in this country. Oh, and the phone number to complain? They're closed on the weekend.

Anyway, I managed to bully Katy into going in town anyway, and we caught the Bourne flick after a bit of shopping in the city center. The rest of the evening went off as planned, which was nice; and we got a chatty cab back home (which was the reason we wanted to take the bus into town in the first place – if Katy drives us, she can't have a drink when we go out).

Sunday was supposed to be a hedonistic, slobby day. Unfortunately, it didn't turn out that way – which is partly my fault. We got up and went to Tesco early to get it out of the way so we'd have time to set up the aquarium and then eat, drink and be merry at home.

Except that I wanted to shore up the shelf where the tank is (it weighs 130lbs when filled, so, ya know…). That meant going to B&Q to get some supplies. I also wanted to get a drill pump – a pump that is powered by a drill to transfer liquids. One of these thingies:

Sounds simple, right? The doofuses at B&Q didn't have a clue. The nicer people from Homebase thought we wanted a pond waterfall-effect pump. The 17-year old kid from Halfords at least knew what we were talking about but had never seen one in a store but “whenever I want to buy something, I just go on the internet” (Best comment of the day).

Anyway…

By the time we got home, it was 5pm and we hadn't even cracked a bottle open yet. I also wanted to make coq au vin for dinner, which would take a good hour to make. No worries. The plan was that as soon as we got home, I'd put up the brackets, get dinner on and then get started on the aquarium prep.

Except for the drill incident.

Katy has now decided to buy me a proper drill for xmas to avoid any future incidents of the sort. The cordless drill I brought over from Canada is completely useless faced with masonery walls. I'd borrowed Lennart's drill and had it all set up and ready to go. Until I realized that Lennart's drill, being Belgian, had a continental plug – one for which I did not have an adaptor. In the end, we had to pop in the car and go to Phil's place to pick up his drill. What was supposed to be a 5 minute pick-up jobbie ended up in us having a cuppa and watching the end of Shrek 2 with Phil, Caroline and the kiddies.

So it waa 7 by the time we got home and dinner got started.

In the end, to make a long story short, we didn't get drunk. We had a glass with dinner (which was kick ass), but in the end, the simple goal for that day didn't happen. I admit that I got fixated to getting the aquarium up and running, so it's my fault that things went out of whack.

I'm glad the aquarium is up and running, but I feel bad about the rest :(

Poo.

A looooooong update

Posted on August 8, 2007 By admin 6 Comments on A looooooong update

Our story, gentle reader, begins last friday.

It was time to get the furball's booster shots and get him vaccinated for feline leukemia at the same time. Initially, he was only supposed to be an indoor-only cat but since we're planning on letting him out once in a while, he needs that vaccine. We took our brave, strong cat to the vet. He didn't like it. He didn't like us either for the next few days and, to show his displeasure, he peed on the couch. Nice. We're letting him off this time, because the shots left him feeling really under the weather for about 36 hours. He's still a bit dopey at times, but he's getting back to his old annoying self.

That evening, Katy and I went to the pudding club at the pub. It was a glorious meal :) Initially, we weren't sure if we'd be able to go because we left it quite late to try and book a table. In fact, the dining room was indeed full up, but they were able to accommodate us in one of the side booths. It was probably nicer that way, to be honest, because we were quite alone and it was a nice ambiance to have a chat. The “light main” course turned out to be quite a hearty coq au vin (which was divine) and I don't even want to contemplate the number of calories we had trying out all those puddings. The new chef at the pub is a pastry chef and she's brilliant. We also got quite drunk (but just drunk enough). It was a fun night.

Saturday saw us going to Cromer for a beachfront day trip. It was a nice day and it wasn't. Traffic to get there was murder and it was just way too hot to be enjoyable. Cromer seems like a nice seaside town and I wouldn't mind going there again under more enjoyable conditions. I'd learned my lesson in Geneva about wearing a hat but I still managed to get a pisser of a sunburn on the back of my neck. I'm still a bit sore, but it's gradually going away. I have pictures of Cromer and they should be up shortly.

Sunday, Katy baked. A lot. A whole lot. She spent the day at it. The lemon cake was lovely (and is already gone) and the marbled cake has only been sampled once (and will probably be portioned out and frozen before it goes stale – it's huuuuuge!). I made a nice roast chicken dinner and we spent a slow day watching Heroes and Grey's Anatomy episodes that we'd taped earlier in the week.

Yesterday was my birfday (I'm now an old fogey at 32) and I was spoiled rotten.

Katy got me:
– a gift voucher for the Cambridge gliding club good for one towed flight to 2000 feet
– tickets to go see Avenue Q in London this weekend (and she booked us into a nice hotel in Mayfair)
– a thumbring
– a book (You Suck!, by Christopher Moore)
– some chocolate

We had some homemade steak sandwiches with chips and Katy baked (yet again) some freshly-made profiterolles with artery-clogging double cream and dark chocolate. Hooah.

My parents and sister called me earlier in the day and tried to be subtle in telling me to go check my bank balance. I knew they'd said that they were going to pay part of my ticket to go to Canada in September but they went, shall be say, completely off the deep end :) I'm still in shock… THANK YOU!!!

I also got email from Michel last night and I hope to be able to resume our less-than-frequent phone chats with him this week.

Finally, on a purely silly note, I bought myself a SD card for my e-book reader (which, btw, Katy now approves of and wants one for herself :). The card itself is 32 x 24 x 2.1mm and weighs about 2 grams. This is how I got it this morning:

Also, for future reference, here is my flight information for my trip to Canadia:

Gatwick -> Ottawa:
Flight Zoom 411
Leaves Thu 13 Sep 07 14:15
Arrives Thu 13 Sep 07 16:40

Ottawa -> Gatwick:
Flight Zoom 710
Leaves Sun 23 Sep 07 22:55
Arrives Mon 24 Sep 07 10:30

I have no definitive plans yet, but I hope to see as many people as I can.

The day after the night before…

Posted on July 2, 2007 By admin

Very bleh day. It had potential, but it kind of fizzled out in the end. Last night was good. Met up with Donna and Will for his birthday do. We went punting on the Cam and managed to squeek in just before the rain set in. Then there was booze at a riverside bistro. Then there was really, really good food at Cafe Rouge on Bridge St. It was funny. This week is graduation week so everywhere is booked solid. We'd walked in earlier in the day and asked to see if it would be possible to book a table for later in the evening (that's when we found out about grad week and all), but the hostess told us that since it was just the two of us, she might be able to sneak us in if we came back later.

That's what we did, after the punting and the booze. There was a couple who came in the restaurant just before we did that got turned away because they didn't have a booking, but we were quietly ushered in to the restaurant. It turned out that we had prime seats in front of one of the only open windows in the place – and it was a relief cause the whole place was muggy because of the rain and the packed bodies. I had a very good onion soup and a great slab of dead cow with melted blue cheese. Loverly! We met up with Donna, Will and the rest of their troup for another round of drinks, and another, before calling it a day and grabbing a cab back home.

In other news, the cat now has a jingly-bell collar. It's impressive how short a time it took for him to get used to it. We got it for him in preparation of letting him go outside for reasonable periods of time at some point in the near future. We've also gotten a new cage for the gecko, who managed a houdini-like escape act but didn't go too far (we found her in a storage box, happily munching away at some treats). She now has a double-decker condo with better locks.

Today was meh. Slow start to the day, then Tesco for a shop, then home for some Rome reruns and some cooking. The Dr Who finale left a bit to be desired. A bit too much “poof! everything is right in the world again!!!”, but it had some redeeming features.

Dinner was a bit of a letdown. I'd planned onion soup, roast pig and tarte tatin. I think I was a bit too ambitious, given that I was running around all afternoon and trying to watch Dr Who at the same time. It was ok, but not as good as I've made before. Passing grade, but not much else.

I'd hoped to be able to have a nice long chat with Michel tonight but, as is seemingly our usual, we didn't connect. I haven't spoken to him more than a few sentences of email in … it's been that long that I can't even remember now. This is highly distressing… sigh.

Slow weekend

Posted on June 25, 2007 By admin

Last friday was [info]petkatyyazzick's un-birthday.

You see, she's fed up of having a birthday so close to christmas so, like the Queen, she now has an official birthday (June 22nd) as well as a real birthday (December 22nd). That way, she can have prezzies twice a year like everybody else (rather than the “I'll get her something bigger” excuse she normally gets).

I got her a pair of hair straighteners she can use in North America as well as in the UK and arranged with the pub to have her favouritest foods to be put on the specials menu just for her. All in all, it was a nice evening.

Spent the rest of the weekend doing sod all. Even though we need to cut the grass, the weather couldn't make up its mind so the grass alternated between dry, damp and flat-out drenched. I'll try and cut it one night this week. Katy spent the weekend working on her coursework, which is almost done (and that means that her course is almost done – yay!) I took the bus into town on saturday to go pick up a few odds and ends at Boots, a sketching pad and some drawing supplies. I want to start working on the design of my next tat, which will be based on modern Haida art styles. Sunday was spent watching Babylon 5 reruns. Fun fun fun :)

A very domestic weekend

Posted on June 18, 2007 By admin

Last weekend, I cleaned.

The whole friggin house.

It was sorely in need of it.

I stopped counting the loads of laundry I did, and we are now (for the moment) caught up in all the washing up. I probably vacuumed a cat's worth of fur out of the stairwell carpet and the sitting room drapes. We can now see the floor in the bedroom. That weird growth on the kitchen baseboard is no longer alive and well.

All of this makes me happy, but this morning, I ache.

I'm getting old.

We also trimmed back the herb garden. With all the rain and sun we've been having recently, it was threatening to go wild and invade everything in sight. I need to find the best way to dry some of them and keep them for later use.
