A question for the blogosphere

Posted on January 8, 2010 By admin

If anybody is reading this and has wordpress installed:

Are you also getting spam comments like these:

“Comfortably, the article is in reality the freshest on this worthwhile topic. I concur with your conclusions and will thirstfully look forward to your coming updates. Just saying thanks will not just be adequate, for the fantastic lucidity in your writing. I will instantly grab your rss feed to stay privy of any updates. De lightful work and much success in your business enterprize!”

posted to completely irrelevant posts, sometimes dating back months or even years? I’m finding that even with using wp-spamfree, these comments pop in for moderation on a depressingly regular schedule. I’ve started to blacklist IPs, but that’s only helping a bit.

How random…

Posted on January 8, 2007 By admin 2 Comments on How random…

Once in a while, I get random anonymous comments on my blog. Most of those are spam, but occasionally, they're random enough to make me wonder if they're real or not. Case and point, one I received today:

Hi.

Nice site design. Okay, I need your help.
So, I wanna make online-store, and I am looking for site template.
Can you advice some online store or other resource where I can find many site templates?

It would be better if it will be free:)
I think many of us have personal sites, do you design it yourself?

Thanks a lot, Bill.

Now, see, Bill is not a native English speaker, which explains the atrocious grammar. That's fine, he's posting from an IP in Estonia. What's completely useless about this post though is that he doesn't leave me any way to get back to him with answers to his question. So I won't.

What really confuses me though, is that the comment was posted to an entry I wrote weeks ago, which makes me believe it's spam. However, there's no link he's asking me to visit, and he's not trying to sell me anything.

This means that if Bill is a spammer, he's really not that bright. If he's real, he should get a proof-reader and leave a business card.

Sexy Flex!

Posted on December 15, 2006 By admin 4 Comments on Sexy Flex!

I went to a presentation this morning for Adobe Flex this morning that reaffirmed my desire to learn about it and use it. It's a very good application of a RAD platform, but what you can do with it is only limited by what you can imagine. It looks slick and really, really good. In less than 10 minutes, the presenter had a demo of a working picture viewer that allowed you to upload webcam shots to a carousel-like viewer. Impressive.

I already have plans to revamp my own website picture viewer with Flex, as well as recommend it for the online ontology editor we're thinking about at the office.

That's one think about this conference that I'm most impressed with – the amount of new tech that I want to go home and geek on :) Of all the conferences I've been to this year, javapolis is the one I'm going to lobby the most to go back to next year.

How random…

I just lurve it when I get random comments like this:

Hello. Good day
Who listens to what music?
I Love songs Justin Timberlake and Paris Hilton

it's an anonymous comment on my latest blog entry, from some random IP in Brazil (201.24.199.180).

Yay, internet.

This just made my day :)

I love it when random, angry people just stumble on my blog and say stupid things. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

More pissed off than I should be

Posted on September 13, 2006 By admin

I think I've now fixed all that was broken when my friggin ISP got hacked. I have to say that I am not impressed with their tech support. Getting hacked is bad enough, but that's forgivable. Losing all the backups at the same time, less so. Needing to migrate every user account to a new box, you're starting to suck ass. Then we get to the realms of the truly incompetent: creating my account twice, giving me two sets of DNS server information to update my domain name registration. When asked which one to use, giving me the wrong set.

Finally, everything seems to be back up, with all the content found and only one JPG file lost to the ethers. I can live with that. What pisses me off though, really really badly, is that I lost over two years of access logs!

Now I'm not really vain generally, but I liked to be able to see how my website progressed over time. At it's busiest, I was going over 10GB of bandwidth a month! Craptacular.

Quote of the day

Sham Harga had run a succesful eatery for many years by always smiling, never extending credit, and realizing that most of his customers wanted meals properly balanced between the four food groups: sugar, starch, grease and burnt crunchy bits.
