Fete des Vignerons 2019

Posted on July 19, 2019January 6, 2020 By admin

The Fête des Vignerons (Winegrowers’ Festival) is a traditional festival which takes place in Vevey, in Switzerland.

It has been organised by the Confrérie des Vignerons (Brotherhood of Winegrowers) in Vevey since 1797. The organizing committee is free to choose how often the festival takes place, but the maximum number of times is five times in a century. Up to now, the interval between two festivals has varied between 14 and 28 years. The current festival takes place in July and August 2019, which will be 20 years after the preceding one (1999).

The festival features a show celebrating the world of winemaking; many performances take place in the marketplace near the shore of Lac Léman, and festivities also take place in the town itself. Since 2016, the Fête des Vignerons has been included in UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

The 2019 edition of the festival is recommended as one of National Geographic’s “world’s most exciting destinations”, one of The New York Times’s “places to go in 2019” and is listed in The Guardian’s “Where to go in 2019” list.

The show represents a year in the life of the vineyard through twenty scenes starting and finishing with the harvest. It combines the work of the vineyard (pruning/training, etc.), social moments (weddings, Saint-Martin’s Fair) along with more general themes (the seasons, water, the sun, the moon, the stars). It questions the link between man and nature and pays homage to the know-how of winegrowers. At the heart of the show is the Crowning of winegrowers rewarded for their excellence of work by the Confrérie des Vignerons. The narration is carried by a moving dialogue between a little girl called Julie and her grandfather, who enables her to discover the traditions and the work of winegrowers. Three “doctor” characters comment on the performance with humour and impertinence.

The music, which alternates with pieces of ensemble, orchestral pieces or in small formations, accompanied live by the Choeur de la Fête (500 choristers, 300 Percuchorists, 150 children’s voices), the Harmonie de la Fête (120 brass band musicians), the Big Band (16 jazz musicians), the Percussionistes (40 percussionists), the Cors des Alpes (36 Alpine horns), the Petit Ensemble (20 musicians) and the Fifres et Tambours (36 Basel musicians). The Fête orchestra is the Gstaad Festival Orchestra, which will record the score in the studio in spring 2019.

The choreographies of the scenes are performed by 5,500 actors and actresses in costumes, all inhabitants of the region. A total, magical, grandiose, dynamic and poetic performance conceived at 360°, it mixes with the music, the songs that carry the poems of the authors and the crowd movement images and videos projected on giant screens as well as on the immense LED floor of the arena.

To create the seventy different costumes worn by actors and actresses and singers, the costume designer was inspired both by the previous Fête des Vignerons, with a particular interest for the watercolours of Ernest Biéler in 1905 and 1927, and traditional Vaud and Fribourg costumes.

We hemmed and hawed for a long time before getting tickets to the show because they cost a bloody fortune. In retrospect, I’m glad we did because we didn’t have any preconceptions about the show and it was brilliant. Definitively the most Swiss thing I have ever seen – but also worthy of the name spectacle.

We arrived in Vevey in time to see the opening day parade, where all the actors, singers, musicians, winegrowers and animals walk through Vevey before the opening day show. It’s impressive!

Because my phone battery crapped out, I also found a bunch of promo pictures from the interweebs:

Another set of pictures, from the interweebs:

I leave you with this video. Honestly moving moment of the show, and again, the most Swiss thing that I have ever seen.

Wine tasting in Fully

Posted on July 6, 2019July 6, 2019 By admin

Visited the vineyards of Marie-Therese Chappaz. Walked down the vineyards. Loved the scenery but hated the walk. It’s all narrow walkways, uneven stone stairways, steep slopes of foliage over slippery gravel… I’m surprised I didn’t fall off the bloody mountain.

The woman is a mountain goat. She’s just plowing ahead, not a care in the world, passionately talking about her vines, giving instructions to the people working everything by hand, and organizing her daughter’s 30th birthday over the phone…

Caves ouvertes du Valais 2019

Posted on May 31, 2019October 16, 2019 By admin

We went to Gillard, Varone and Maye and came back with probably too much wine… Not cheap, but we focused on quality rather than quantity. The Bonvin cuvée 1858 is a gem!

Divinum as a taster, and not a volunteer

Posted on April 7, 2019October 16, 2019 By admin

We had our attack plan for Divinum. We did most of the stands we wanted to try. In some cases, the reception was poor and we didn’t linger. In others, the wines weren’t as nice as we remembered them. But, in the end, we discovered and re-discovered some of our favourites. We ordered more this year than in previous years, but we still played it fairly safe. Dieci Cavalli and a really nice Valpolicella Ripasso from Enoteca Capponi, the S’escusu Salice Salentino Riserva (and a few jars of tuna-stuffed red peppers) from Elvira Caligara-Monsellato, and the Cornalin and Humagne Rouge from Varone – which every year until now, we really liked, didn’t buy, and sorta regretted it afterwards. Maye was there as well, but they didn’t have their full stock at hand to taste, so we’ll have to drive out there when the Valais has its open cave day.

Ben got a bit tired and grumpy when the food ran out partly through the afternoon, so we sent him home and finished what we wanted to taste. Katy, bless, discovered what happens when her Grogan instincts on not throwing away any sort of alcohol came into conflict with reworked internal plumbing and much less body weight to counteract the effect. In other words, she got right wasted, Lesta-style! I haven’t seen her that drunk in a loooong time. Sadly, or happily, I’m still debating it, I was only sipping and then throwing out most of my wine, so I was mostly still sober and was able to drag/prop her up on the way home.

Edit: I wanted to leave this here as a reminder for the next Caves Ouvertes:

Domaine du Beau-Soleil, in Mont-sur-Rolled.

Divinum 2019, the less good day

Posted on April 6, 2019October 16, 2019 By admin

Day 2 of glasswashing was sub-par. 4 of the scheduled volunteers didn’t show up, so we were short-staffed and slammed. People were grumpy. I didn’t really have a break all evening, but at least we got a couple of bottles thrown our way by kind-hearted people.

Team spirit was still fairly high and the mood light, until I realised that some jackass nicked my Roots fleece. I mean, the thing was falling apart at the seams, but I really loved that coat and it was a shitty thing to do. I’m hoping one of the jeunesse took it by accident, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Divinum 2019

Posted on April 5, 2019October 16, 2019 By admin

I’m volunteering for Divinum again this year, working in general logistics one evening and glassware two evenings. The first night, Wednesday, was fairly quiet – emptying out spittoons and making sure the bins were emptied.

Tonight was seriously more animated. I must’ve gotten my 10,000 steps in tonight, picking up crates of dirty glasses and trying to get clean ones to exhibitors in an orderly fashion. Those that were too impatient bribed the staff with bottles. Free market in action. Or they might just have been nice :)

La nuit des épouvantails

Posted on September 29, 2018October 3, 2018 By admin

Au départ il y a une légende,
Celle de l’épouvantail,
Que certains prétendent,
N’être qu’une cassibraille.

Elle fut trouvée par hasard,
Dans le galetas du château.
Elle raconte l’histoire bizarre
De quelques épouvantaux.

Ils furent donnés aux vignerons,
Par Amédée beau garçon,
Notre Bon Comte de Savoie,
Bienveillant de surcroît.

Qui… écoutez bien camarades !
Pour protéger le raisin des oiseaux,
Imagina cette parade,
Pour apeurer les étourneaux.

Obligés de sa bonté,
Promesse fut faite,

A Morges notre chef-lieu,
On a dressé des chapiteaux.

Ils arrivèrent sous les hourras
D’une foule en allégresse.
Devant Amédée… Alléluia!
Donnant le raisin, tinrent la promesse.

Alors Monseigneur reconnaissant,

This was not your average, traditional harvest festival.

Here are some of the “official” pictures from the show:

Evening at Changins

Posted on June 6, 2018October 16, 2019 By admin

One of the upsides of being at the NRC is having access to some of the social activities. I’ve joined the oenology club. Last week, we had a tasting of South African wines. This week, we went to Changins, the Swiss national center of excellence for training in viticulture, oenology and arboriculture.

They have over 50 types of vines growing on a plot the size of our old garden in Hinxton, and each year, the students must do a winemaking project that can use any sort of process, technique and instrumentation that they have available. Many of the local growers will donate parts of their harvest to the school to aid the students (because, you know, it’s not always easy to find 6 tons of grapes at the drop of a hat).

Quote of the day

"Don't put your trust in revolutions. They always come around again. That's why they're called revolutions. People die, and nothing changes."
