Notes from a bemused canuck
Starting January 1st, write down the good things that happen to you on little pieces of paper and put them in a jar. These can include:
– Surprise gifts
– Accomplished goals
– LOL moments
– Memories worth saving
Then on December 31st (or whenever you need a pick me up) open the jar and read all of the amazing things that happened to you!
2016 sucked. There’s no two ways about it. There was Ebola and Zika, bombs in Belgium and Lahore, Syrian refugees drowning all over the place, kids living alone in slums in Calais, 14 (!) school shootings in the US, Brexit, Nigel, Boris, Theresa, Pulse shootings, Kim Davis, Trump… the list unfortunately goes on.
For the idiots we kept, we lost David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Terry Wogan, Harper Lee, Paul Daniels, Ronnie Corbett, Prince, Morley Safer, Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe, Anton Yelchin, Jerry Doyle, Kenny Baker, Toots Thielemans, Gene Wilder, Neville Marriner, Leonard Cohen, and many more.
On a personal note, while there were some good moments, Katy and I found 2016 hard as a couple. Until I changed groups, work was toxic.
So, with firm conviction, I say fuck you 2016, and we can only hope 2017 will be better.

It’s been a very long day and tomorrow will be even longer. We’re very full of good food, plentiful drink and copious cigars. We’re off to bed, wishing a safe end to a shitty year, and hoping that the next one will be better.

We forgot to instagram it! Granddad paid it the highest compliment, he said it was so nice, he forgot to drink his wine!
(As a side note, it was a vegetarian leg of lamb marinated in fennel and lemon, with the usual sides, and some braised red cabbage)
