The joys of the informal dinner party

Posted on November 29, 2015November 29, 2015 By admin

We had some friends over for dinner tonight, a couple we met through school with their kids. It was fun. Really fun. Adult conversation, the kids played together, we ate, we drank. Just good, simple fun. It make me realise that we really need to do this more often.

It’s the bean’s birthday and we went to dinner at Da Carlo’s. Nice walk on the way back to the car.

Meat!

We did our quarterly Aligro run to stock up on meat. Given the insane prices for meat, it’s cheaper to buy in bulk, especially when you factor in stuff that’s on offer. We got chicken legs, chicken boobs, sausages, ham, a beef shoulder roast and fresh tuna steaks. Every thing gets portioned out and frozen.

Bean’s been very excited and anxious to go back to school. Very. We met with his teacher(s) this morning and they all seem nice. We also found out that the little girl he sits next to in class lives in our building :)

The world’s only sight-only guard dog

Little yellow dog is getting old and is now deaf as a post. She follows my dad around with her eyes all the time. If she sees anything out of place, she’ll bark like a hellhoumd, but an invisible burglar could tap dance playing the bagpipes and rob my parents blind…

I offended someone today!

We went to a nature park today. As part of the tour, you could take a tractor tour where you sit on hay bales and drive from one part of the nature reserve to another. Katy and I were the last people to get on the trailer and we were looking for seats. I’d just started to sit down when this old guy, sitting across from me, says to his family “we’re getting off! Now! I can’t spend the trip (about 10 minutes) looking at that t-shirt.” Then he turns to me and says, “for God’s sake, there are children here. Grow up!”

People were looking a bit bemused by all of this. When we got out after the ride, one family came up to us to see what all the fuss had been about. After telling the story, they laughed and thanked us because him leaving had freed up some space to allow them to come on.

I don’t know why the man had such a big stick wedged so far up his ass. Katy thinks he’s a repressed vegan who strenuously objected to the mention of sausage rolls. In any case, I’m actually tickled pink to have offended someone to that extent, just by being me. Sort of a personal best :D

Happy birthday to me!

Katy and I met Michel for dinner and drinks tonight (well, technically yesterday by this point). We had a really good meal at Le pied de cochon. There was duck carpaccio, charcuterie, pig, pig, foie gras, more pig. And wine. Much wine (even if Katy got her glass nicked at some point). Then there was gin. And cigars. And whiskey. And more gin.

Katy’s possessed phone took a very representative picture of the evening.

It was good. I love my wifey, and I love my bro.

My morning wake-up call purrs

Ever since Katy left for Blighty, Pavel has become uber clingy. I’ll wake up with him sprawled all along my back, or sometimes, like this morning, with him on my pillow with his back (if I’m lucky)  or his butt (if I’m not) pressed to the side of my head.

Other times, I’ll just wake up with him perched on the crossbeam looking down at me like a furry gargoyle, chittering at me to go and feed him.

Quote of the day

The one positive thing you could say about the bread products around him was that they were probably as edible now as they were on the day they were baked. *Forged* was a better term. Dwarf bread was made as a meal of last resort and also as a weapon and a currency. Dwarfs were not, as far as Vimes knew, religious in any way, but the way they thought about bread came close.
--(Terry Pratchett, The Fifth Elephant)
